With its 19,633 square kilometers Kruger National Park is the largest nature reserve in Africa. In the middle of the park by the Olifants River you will find the Danish-owned Mpala Safari Lodge, which offers exclusive safari accommodation for up to 12 people – the perfect starting point for your safari trip.

Kruger National Park is located in the northeastern part of South Africa and spans the provinces of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. Since it opened in 1927 it has attracted more and more tourists due to the huge variety of wildlife with about 147 different species of mammals – including over 12,000 elephants, 27,000 African buffalo and 1,000 leopards – 517 species of birds and 114 different reptile species including crocodiles.

Because of the large number of tourists visiting the Kruger National Park every year, it can be hard to find a quiet place to get close to the animals – at least in the southern part of the nature reserve.

A nice little niche in Kruger National Park

But if you head a little further northeast, towards the center of the park at the Olifants River, you come to a more secluded area with fewer tourists. Here lies the Danish-owned and operated Mpala Safari Lodge, where you’re sure to get a front-row seat to view the animals and where there is always an employee at hand with the time to help you with even your smallest requests and questions.

Mpala Safari Lodge only accommodates 12 guests at a time, housed in our exclusive duplexes with views directly over the Olifants River and the magnificent surrounding scenery. This ensures that you’ll have the perfect safari experience with a closeness to nature far beyond anything you’d experience in the more congested parts of the nature reserve.

A week with lots of excursions

To get the most out of your visit, we recommend that you stay at least a week. The week starts with a welcoming traditional tribal dance put on by the local Sotho tribe.

The next day we go on a hike into the bush led by our experienced and – as a precaution – armed guides who will point out animals, nature and wildlife you might not otherwise discover.

The week also includes a photo safari in an open top Jeep or ATV (you get to pick), a delicious and romantic evening meal in the bush that is cooked over an open fire and a night drive, to give you a first-hand experience of the fantastic animal life by night.

If that wasn’t enough excitement, we take you on a two-day expedition deep into the Kruger National Park, where you will have ample opportunities to take a closer look at the amazing wildlife.

You will also get the chance to visit the local village school – which by the way is sponsored by Mpala Lodge. This is our way to give something back in appreciation of the local society for the great nature and the friendly neighborhood.
